On December 11, 2024, a workshop titled “Mainstreaming community-led disaster and climate risk reduction and management – the role of local leadership, indigenous knowledge, and innovation” was convened.
The workshop was organized to showcase the impact of community-led actions emerging from different part of Asia during the Regional Humanitarian Partnership Week 2024 (RHPW2024) in Bangkok. It was co-organized by ADRRN Tokyo Innovation Hub (ATIH) and ADRRN CBDRRM Hub.
12 community-led innovation projects were presented by innovators and facilitators at tables, and the participants exchanged their observations about the innovations.
The participants were impressed with the community-led approach which they found was appropriate and relevant in terms of catering to the needs of the community, the ownership and sustainability.
Several mentioned that using indigenous knowledge and locally available materials do not only make the solution accessible and affordable for the community but also maintains and restores the natural ecosystem.
To better communicate the impact of the community-led innovation, it was suggested that wider implication of the impact, such as the engagement of other community members, the change in community power dynamics, and religious or gender issues, be included in addition to quantifying the impact.
